In-Service Courses

for In-Service Training of Schools Principals

The curriculum is developed according to the norms of basic educational documents, such as Declaration of Human Rights, the Laws “On education”, “On protection of childhood”, the State standards of primary, basic and complete education and many others. It aims to develop managerial competences of secondary school principals.

The curriculum envisages the implementation of the following tasks:

  • Purposeful development of managerial competence of school principals, their educational and intellectual culture as well as self-motivation and self-realization;
  • Andragogical approach to education;
  • The formation of reflexive and analytical skill and the ability to adequate self-evaluation and  the analysis of their personal managerial decisions and experience;
  • Develop skills to monitor educational activities within  the groups and  of each participant in particular;
  • Providing advice and giving methodical support for further professional and personal growth of school principals.
  • Satisfaction of personal directors’ professional needs.


The system of postgraduate education of school directors foresees training and preparation of competent, highly qualified professionals who can:

  • Realize the task of reforming education;
  • Creatively interpret the purpose and the objectives of the functioning of educational institutions and effectively combine innovative theories, ideas and modern educational technologies;
  • Acquire knowledge of management theory of social systems, philosophy of education, sociology and psychology of management, organizational psychology, personnel management, monitoring the quality of education, use of information-communication technologies.

The curriculum reflects modern development of educational and psychological science, theory and practice of education, organizational psychology, personnel management and intended for secondary school heads in order to develop their qualification in condition of transformation of society.

Chapters of the curriculum determine the essence of professional competence of a school director.

In order to monitor the quality of organization and educational content of the learning process as well as to know the level of the audience and to get a feedback, the trainees are given an input, intermediate and output testing. Input control involves identifying the level of knowledge and skills of the students. Output control is held to see the level of effectiveness of their study. The thematic plan is designed for 108 hours. 72 of them include classroom trainings, other 36 hours they have independent work. The plan is structured in three modules: the socio-humanitarian, professional and diagnostic. To master the materials of the first and the third modules it is assigned up to 10 % of the total hours. The hours of professional module cover 80 % of the time. To study the content of socio-humanitarian and diagnostic modules trainees need 10 hours for each. Professional module includes 52 hours. Number of hours for independent work of students is divided as follows. Diagnostic – 10 hours. Total – 36 hours. Invariant component of social and humanitarian module is fixed by the number of hours and subject content. Students are given the opportunity to choose the courses from the variation part, which is not more than 10% of the total. Invariant component of professional module includes the following disciplines: organizational management, psychology, educational management, educational leadership, innovation activity, but the variation part suggests lectures on religion, psychology, specialized education, modern educational technologies, Ukrainian business language and so on.

Theoretical classes are held in the form of lectures, round-table discussions, and scientific conferences. Practical classes are held in order to develop mechanisms for implementation of progressive technologies of management activities during the training sessions, seminars and modeling workshops.

Variable component of the study provides a range of special elective courses, which are necessary for the development of managerial skills. Trainees are offered the following courses: school documentation, scientific and methodical work, work with gifted children, the formation of culture health identity and so on. The usefulness of training leaders for secondary schools is made by means of implementation of both invariant and variable blocks of humanitarian and socio-professional modules. Diagnostic and Analysis module is invariant and assumes an adjusting lesson, an incoming diagnostic testing, scientific and practical conference, the out coming diagnostic testing and qualifying exams.

The results of the courses show that such training provokes critical and creative thinking, intensify the development of professional skills and forms the willingness to work in the conditions of dynamic changes of values in the society, economical changes and innovations in education.
